Billy Joel Cancels Tour Dates Following Devastating Brain Illness Diagnosis

The American musician Billy Joel has been found to have a neurological condition which has led to the cancellation of all his scheduled performances in North America and England.

Joel shared on Instagram that he has been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, which causes fluid accumulation in his brain affecting his hearing, sight, and stability.

This situation has worsened due to recent concert appearances, as stated by Joel's team. Following his physician's guidance, Billy is engaged in particular physiotherapy sessions and has been recommended not to perform until this recuperation phase concludes.

In a related statement, Joel remarked, "I genuinely apologize for letting down our viewers, and I appreciate your comprehension."

In March, the crooner behind hits like 'The Piano Man' and 'Uptown Girl' revealed that he had undergone surgery and needed to go through physical therapy. At the time, a statement indicated that doctors anticipated a complete recovery for him. However, it remains uncertain whether his health problems back then were linked to Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

This condition can lead to difficulties with walking, urinary control, and cognitive functions, with symptoms intensifying without treatment. It is quite uncommon and might pose challenges for diagnosis. Successful management often involves surgical insertion of a drainage tube to remove surplus fluids. Post-surgery, patients could benefit from additional physical therapy.

Joel, who is 76 years old, concluded his decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden in July 2024 and went on to continue touring. The scheduled summertime performances encompassed concerts at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field in New York, along with a show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Refunds will be issued for tickets to all these performances.
